The Brief History of CALL

Hello Lodestars!🙋 Yesterday, I was thinking about actually how similar the teachers and a lodestar are. They both somehow touch someones' hearts and lead them to the right paths. Thus, I decided to call all of you as "Lodestars". 🌟

After the footnote, shall we talk about what actually CALL is?

Here below, you see a timeline which is made by me.  If you want to create your own online timeline click here.

         For a Better Understanding✅
  • Firstly, please, make sure you read and examine the timeline.
  • Secondly, read the information part I've written.

If we want to clarify CALL, we can clearly say "the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning." (Levy, 1997: 1)  While talking about 21st Century Learning, we always said that, "Students want to be creators, they are the ones who need to use the technology." Thereby, some people in the past must have noticed this issue, and CALL programmes have emerged.
In order to make things easier, let's divide them into three:
  1. Behaviouristic CALL
  2. Communicative CALL
  3. Integrative CALL
📌  The first entrance of CALL in education system was in terms of Behaviouristic CALL (1960s-1970s). The main focus in the learning process was to learn the language through conditioning. Teaching machines and programmes were fun, time saving and they were giving immediate feedback (True/False etc.) for habit formation. But again, there was a problem. Because, the learners did not have the chance to interact with their teachers and peers.
📌Afterwards, Communicative CALL showed up in 1980s. There were important changes in CALL program in contrast to Behaviouristic CALL. This time, learners were encouraged to interact; simply, to talk. The programmes were not telling to students if they are right or wrong, and the answers were various. Also, CALL programmes were meaning-focused.

      💻Computers were seen as:
  • Tutor
  • Stimulus
  • Tool
Unfortunately that was not enough for interaction and creativity.

📌 Finally, Integrative CALL took the action in mid 1990s in order to turn the learners into ultimately the doers & creators. There are real life tasks which make learners think critically and create meaningful learnings instead of the rote ones. In addition, there are so many web-based activities and by the help of these activities learners can interact with each other and share their opinions & works freely.
To conclude, the time passes swiftly. In everyday, in every minute or second the technology grows fast. I am pretty sure that the future is going to bring us much more programmes or new ideas on education. Then, let's make our teas and be ready for the innovations. 💁☕
